Jānis N.!

Jānis is a young man who happily visits the Day Centre every day. He rides a bicycle, because it makes him happy to stay active. When recalling his first days at the Day Centre, Jānis tells us that he was very worried and had trouble speaking. Now he has gotten used to the place and feels confident enough to express his thoughts. By visiting this establishment, he has become more open, communicative and feels useful to the society. Jānis likes to talk about himself in slow-spoken sentences and is open to conversation.

In the beginning, he worked in the candle workshop, where he made candles, and later in the ceramics workshop, where he created bowls, candle holders and figurines. He likes to shape bowls, so that their surface is as smooth as possible. Since Christmas is coming, Jānis has been carefully cleaning conifer cones to make them into decorations. These cones are then arranged in the Advent wreaths. The wreaths will be available in our stores to bring joy into your home. The Day Centre support staff describes him as a diligent and attentive young man. He does not like it when people around him are loud and behave rudely. He will always try to close the door behind him so there is no draught in the room. If Jānis finds something to be unacceptable, he will point it out.
At the Day Centre, Jānis gladly takes part in exercise classes, and his best friend is Kristaps. He usually accompanies Kristaps to the train station and only goes home after having done so. At home, his mom waits for him. Jānis has a sister who lives in the United Kingdom. He is looking forward to Christmas, when his sister might visit them and everyone would be together during the holidays. At home they make pīrāgi (traditional Latvian bacon buns), rasols (salad made from boiled sausage, potatoes, green peas, pickled cucumber and boiled eggs) and decorate the Christmas tree together. Jānis is good at making potato pancakes. With a smile on his face, Jānis laughingly says that he will have to keep an eye on his cat Mazulis (Baby), so that his animal friend does not knock over the Christmas tree. :)
In the evenings he likes to watch action movies, and his favourite book is Doctor Dolittle. He also understands English, but does not speak it. It is useful for when he travels, which is currently not possible. He hopes that each of us has a friend beside us, that we enjoy the work we do and that we get some inspiration every day.
